Covid and Travel Insurance

With the world reopening again and foreign holidays looking like a real reality for many households, it has never been more important for you to have the right travel insurance to make sure you are protected should you fall ill or something happens to you abroad.

However, don’t be fooled into thinking you may have Covid cover with your insurance automatically as there are a few scenarios that would mean you’re not covered.

As a general rule, most travel insurers will not cover the following:
– Cancellation pf your holiday if entry restrictions in your destination mean you can’t go on your trip
– No cover for ANYTHING if you decide to travel to a region or country against the advice of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

In addition to the above, here are a few examples of Covid-related cancellation cover you can typically expect:

Scenario: You/family member cannot travel as you/they test positive for Covid-19
Covered by travel insurance policy? Most insurers do cover this unless you are due to travel against Government guidance.

Scenario: You/family member test positive or Covid-19 overseas and need to extend your trip and/or get medical assistance
Covered by travel insurance policy? Most insurers do cover this unless you have travelled against Government guidance.

Scenario: You/family member can’t travel as planned as told to isolate by NHS (note this is no longer a legal requirement in England).
Covered by travel insurance policy? Some over this – you will need to check with insurer/policy

Scenario: Government restrictions in the UK mean you can’t travel, such as a lockdown or change in FCDO travel advice.
Covered by travel insurance policy? Few over this – you will need to check with insurer/policy

Scenario: Overseas government restrictions mean you can’t travel, such as lockdowns and quarantine on entry.
Covered by travel insurance policy? Generally NOT covered (though a few cover cancelling pre-booked accommodation).

Scenario: You can’t go as you’re not willing/able to meet quarantine requirements on return to the UK (if applicable).
Covered by travel insurance policy? Generally NOT covered (though a few cover hotel quarantine costs if you choose to travel).

Scenario: Can’t travel as you don’t feel safe going.
Covered by travel insurance policy? NOT covered – travel insurance never covers ‘disinclination to travel’.

Scenario: Can’t travel as you don’t feel safe going.
Covered by travel insurance policy? NOT covered – travel insurance never covers ‘disinclination to travel’.

In addition to the above comes advice on Covid travel insurance for those who had made the decision not to / aren’t able to have the vaccines. Should to go abroad and contract Covid, requiring isolation, an extended stay and/or medical care, you MUST check your policy beforehand and understand the associated risks if you do continue to travel. Most insurers will not cover anything related to Covid if you or members of your travelling party are NOT vaccinated.
